Ahiru no Sora

Ahiru no Sora is a long-running manga series by Takeshi Hinata that began serialization in 2004, eventually receiving this television anime adaptation produced by studio diomedéa, which premiered in 2019. The series was designed to offer a gritty, grounded alternative to more stylized sports anime, focusing on the internal struggles, social isolation, and persistent dedication of its protagonist, Sora Kurumatani, who lacks the typical physical stature expected of a basketball star.

The 2019 adaptation was produced under the direction of Keizou Kusakawa and Shingo Tamaki, who sought to capture the series' emphasis on human drama rather than purely cinematic spectacle. While the animation style was noted for its attempt to maintain the aesthetic integrity of Hinata's original character designs, the series is primarily recognized by fans for its focus on the slow, often painful grind of athletic improvement and the socio-emotional themes inherent in high school sports culture.
