Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari Specials

Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, or Tales of Little Women, was produced by Nippon Animation in 1987 as the 13th entry in the long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. The series was created to adapt classic Western literature for Japanese television, aiming to provide wholesome, emotionally resonant stories for families. The production team, led by director Fumio Kurokawa, sought to maintain the high standards of character-driven storytelling established by previous entries like Anne of Green Gables.

The specials associated with the series were generally produced to extend the narrative arc or provide commemorative recaps for the broadcast audience. The animation style is characterized by the soft, expressive aesthetic typical of the 1980s Nippon Animation house style, focusing on the domestic development of the March sisters. Upon release, the series was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material while successfully grounding the narrative in a distinctively gentle, sentimental visual language.
