Ai no Kusabi

Ai no Kusabi was produced by Anime International Company (AIC) as a two-part original video animation (OVA) series, released in 1992. It is based on the influential science fiction novel series written by Rieko Yoshihara, which began serialization in the late 1980s. The story is set on the dystopian planet Amoi, exploring a rigid, caste-based society governed by a supercomputer, and centers on the complex, fraught relationship between Iason Mink, a high-ranking member of the elite class, and Riki, a member of the lower-class 'mongrel' population.

The visual direction and character designs of the OVA were crafted to reflect the stark, cold, and high-tech aesthetic of the source material. By focusing on themes of social hierarchy, power dynamics, and tragic romance, the project helped define the visual language of the boys' love genre during the 1990s.
