Aikatsu!

Aikatsu! was launched by Bandai in 2012 as part of a strategic multimedia franchise, centered around a digital card game arcade system that allowed players to dress up virtual idols. Produced by the animation studio Sunrise, the television series served as the primary narrative engine for this ecosystem, following the journey of Ichigo Hoshimiya as she navigates the prestigious Starlight Academy. The series was designed to appeal to younger audiences by blending elements of fashion, music, and the competitive world of idol stardom, effectively bridging the gap between physical collectible cards and broadcast entertainment.

The creative direction focused on high-energy, colorful animation and an extensive catalog of original pop music, which became central to the series' identity. Directed by Ryuichi Kimura, the show emphasized themes of friendship and perseverance, helping it become a significant cultural touchstone in Japan. It was well-received for its consistent production quality and its ability to turn the act of 'Aikatsu'—or 'idol activities'—into a compelling, relatable pursuit for its viewers, eventually leading to a long-running franchise that spanned multiple sequels and spin-offs.
