Where it came from
A Hundred Scenes of AWAJIMA emerged in 2026 as a landmark television project from Studio Madhouse, conceived during a period when the studio sought to push the boundaries of episodic visual storytelling. The series was designed to explore the folklore and distinct topography of the fictionalized island of Awajima, blending hyper-realistic environmental design with a deliberate, slow-burn narrative structure that challenged contemporary animation trends.
The creative direction was spearheaded by visionary artists within the Madhouse collective who aimed to craft a meditative viewing experience, focusing on atmospheric world-building rather than traditional action tropes. Upon its release, the series was received with critical acclaim for its sophisticated color palette and innovative background art, cementing its status as a notable entry in the studio's modern catalog of prestige animation.
