Two playing children see a hat blown away by the breeze and land at the top of a tall tree. They can only look at that bright thing perched snugly up high. Song by Japanese singer Shimonari Satoko on NHK's Minna no Uta show.

Where it came from
Akai Boushi, or Red Hat, originated as a beloved series of short animated segments featured on NHK’s children’s programming. Designed to captivate young viewers with whimsical storytelling and distinctively warm, illustrative aesthetics, the series drew upon the visual language of Japanese picture books from the era, emphasizing a sense of wonder and gentle moral instruction.
The character design and art direction were developed by a collaborative team of NHK staff illustrators who sought to create a character that felt both timeless and approachable. The project was received positively by families for its gentle pacing and high artistic quality, eventually becoming an iconic fixture in Japanese television culture and serving as a touchstone for the domestic animation style of its time.
