Where it came from
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor, known in Japan as Roku de Nashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records, began as a light novel series written by Tarō Hitsuji and illustrated by Kurone Mishima. The story follows Glenn Radars, a lethargic and seemingly incompetent substitute magic instructor, as he navigates the high-stakes environment of a magical academy. The series gained significant traction for its blend of lighthearted classroom antics and darker, complex fantasy world-building, which prompted its adaptation into an anime format.
The 2017 television series adaptation was produced by studio LIDENFILMS and directed by Minato Kazuto. The production team focused on balancing the light novel's comedic character dynamics with the intricate magical combat sequences characteristic of the genre. Upon its release, the series was noted for its distinct character designs and its role in the mid-2010s trend of adapting fantasy light novels that subvert the 'heroic teacher' archetype, ultimately building a dedicated following within the anime community.
