Where it came from
Akisutozeneko, or The Cat That Lived a Million Times, was originally conceived as a picture book by Yoko Sano in 1977. Its transition into animation via NHK captured the melancholic and philosophical essence of the original story, which explores themes of life, death, and the nature of love. The production maintained a minimalist aesthetic to reflect the stark emotional journey of the titular cat, who survives a million lives only to find meaning after experiencing genuine loss and connection.
The character design was praised for its ability to convey complex existential themes through simple, expressive line work. By distilling the narrative into a gentle, accessible format, NHK aimed to reach a broad audience, encouraging viewers to contemplate the value of their own existence. The adaptation has since been recognized as a poignant cultural touchstone in Japan, frequently cited for its success in balancing somber subject matter with a delicate, visually understated style.
