Synopsis

The age of the demons has begun. Dr Faust has foreseen this rise of evil. Unfortunately, he is near death and is unable to personally battle this upcoming threat. Faust entrusts a young boy, Shingo Yamada, to take the responsibility of ridding the Earth of this new evil presence. Faust finds a birthmark on Shingo's forehead that signifies that he is the chosen demon fighter. Faust summons from hell what may be humanity's only hope of surviving: a less than enthusiastic devil named Mephisto rises. After signing a pact in blood to save humankind, Shingo and Mephisto set out to battle the supernatural world.

Provenance

Where it came from

The 1989 Akuma-kun television series was produced by Toei Animation, marking the second major adaptation of Shigeru Mizuki's classic manga. While the original 1960s source material leaned into darker, more surreal occult horror, this 1989 iteration was crafted with a broader audience in mind, pivoting toward a supernatural adventure series that emphasized the camaraderie between the protagonist and his twelve mystical allies.

The series design aesthetic reflects the transition into the late Showa and early Heisei era of anime production, blending Mizuki's signature grotesque character designs with the vibrant, stylized animation common to Toei's output of the period. Directed by Junichi Sato, the series aimed to balance the moral complexity of summoning demons to save humanity with a more accessible, episodic format that helped solidify Akuma-kun as a cornerstone of occult-themed Japanese animation.
