A fortuneteller tells Hidari Taisho that he must hunt down 1000 foxes in order to conquer the country. So Akuemon, who is disliked by everybody, is hired to do the foxhunting. In response, the foxes send a female fox to Akuemon's house disguised as his wife. A story unfolds between Akuemon, who has never loved anyone, and the female fox, who slowly discovers true love in him even while tormented by sorrow over her comrades' death. This is the 6th work in "The Lion Books" series. It is also the first attempt by visualist Tezuka Makoto, Tezuka's older son, to render an original of his father's into an animated version.

Where it came from
Akuemon was produced in 1993 by Tezuka Productions as part of a project intended to adapt the diverse works of Osamu Tezuka for the original video animation market. The story is a dark, historical period piece set during the chaos of the Muromachi period, focusing on a young boy who survives by crafting masks and his complex relationship with a legendary thief. It reflects the darker, more cynical narrative tones that Tezuka occasionally explored, moving away from the whimsical nature of his more famous family-friendly titles.
The animation style is characterized by the distinct, rounded character designs synonymous with the studio's preservation of Tezuka's legacy, balanced against a grim, violent setting. While it was produced well after Tezuka's passing, the creative team aimed to maintain the rhythmic visual storytelling that defined his manga legacy. Upon its release, it was noted primarily by animation historians and dedicated fans of the late author for its stark departure from typical shonen tropes, serving as a somber meditation on the survival instincts required during times of war.
