Akuma to Himegimi

Akuma to Himegimi, or The Devil and the Princess, was produced by Toei Animation in 1981 as a feature-length entry in their tradition of adapting folklore and fairy tales for a younger audience. The film emerged during a period where Toei was heavily invested in establishing the technical standards of Japanese theatrical animation, often utilizing established talent from their television divisions to translate classic narrative structures into visual experiences suitable for family cinema.

The visual direction and character designs reflect the mid-century aesthetic that defined Toei's output during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The production aimed for a whimsical, high-fantasy tone, emphasizing clear, expressive character animation and pastoral backgrounds. While the film is considered a minor work within the studio's vast filmography, it serves as a representative example of the industry's focus on moralizing fables before the massive shift toward the darker, more experimental OVA market that characterized the following decade.
