Where it came from
Allison & Lillia was produced by Studio Madhouse in 2008 as a two-part adaptation of the light novel series by Keiichi Sigsawa. The series was designed to translate the expansive, adventurous scope of the original literature into a visual narrative, balancing military conflict with a coming-of-age story set in a fictionalized, war-torn world. By choosing Madhouse, the production aimed for a polished, cinematic aesthetic that highlighted the emotional development of the two protagonists across different generations.
The series was directed by Masayoshi Nishida and character designs were handled by Shinya Hasegawa, who sought to capture a classic, storybook-inspired visual identity. It was received as a nostalgic and character-driven work that distinguished itself from the more common high-fantasy or school-life genres of the time. While it maintained a modest cult following, it remains respected for its faithfulness to the source material's exploration of peace and personal growth against a backdrop of historical volatility.
