Where it came from
Alice & Zoroku is a 2017 television anime series adapted from the manga by Tetsuya Imai, produced by the studio J.C.Staff. The narrative centers on a young girl with supernatural abilities named Sana who escapes a research facility and encounters a stubborn, elderly florist named Zoroku. The series explores themes of found family and the challenges of integrating extraordinary powers into a mundane, grounded world.
The production was directed by Katsushi Sakurabi, who aimed to balance the series' high-concept fantasy elements with a realistic, character-driven tone. By focusing on the interplay between the impulsive, childlike Sana and the disciplined, traditionalist Zoroku, the series sought to subvert typical action-oriented tropes found in the super-powered youth genre. Upon its release, it was noted for its distinct contrast between its whimsical premise and its surprisingly poignant emotional stakes.
