Where it came from
Alps no Shoujo Heidi: Alm no Yama-hen is a feature-length compilation film released in 1996 by Nippon Animation. It was created to condense the narrative of the beloved 1974 television series, which had been directed by Isao Takahata with character designs by Yoichi Kotabe and layout contributions from Hayao Miyazaki. The film serves as a focused retrospective, centering on the iconic sequences set in the Swiss Alps, capturing the series' hallmark commitment to realism and pastoral beauty.
The 1996 release was produced as part of a recurring interest in repackaging the studio's classic catalog for a new generation of viewers. By utilizing the original animation cells and artistic direction from the 1974 production, the film preserves the gentle, atmospheric aesthetic that made the series a landmark in world animation. Upon its release, it was received as a nostalgic vessel for the original series, maintaining the legacy of the World Masterpiece Theater collection and the emotional resonance of Johanna Spyri's classic tale.
