Alps Stories: My Annette

Alps Stories: My Annette was produced by Nippon Animation in 1983 as the ninth entry in the long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. Based on the 1894 novel Treasures of the Snow by British author Patricia St. John, the series was adapted to television by screenwriters who aimed to translate the poignant narrative of life in a Swiss mountain village into an accessible format for Japanese youth audiences. The series explores themes of guilt, forgiveness, and reconciliation through the story of a young girl named Annette and her relationship with her friend Lucien.

The visual aesthetic was directed by Kōzō Kusuba, who sought to capture the rustic, serene atmosphere of the Swiss Alps through a soft, pastoral color palette and detailed background art. The character designs were handled by Shuichi Seki, a veteran of the World Masterpiece Theater whose work is noted for its expressive simplicity and warmth. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its earnest portrayal of moral development and its immersive, tranquil depiction of alpine living, cementing its status as a staple of 1980s family-oriented animation.
