Fear runs rampant throughout Tokyo with the revelation that demons in fact exist amongst us. Paranoia and the darker side of humanity boils onto the streets as people turn on one another, suspecting that anyone could in fact be a demon hiding in human clothing. Amidst the growing tensions, tragedy strikes Akira causing his mind to snap, retreating into his subconscious, allowing his Devilish alter-ego Amon to break free from Akira's cage of flesh and wreak havoc on both human and demons alike.

Where it came from
Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman was produced by Studio Live and released as an original video animation in 2000. It serves as a darker, alternative retelling of the latter half of Go Nagai’s seminal manga, Devilman. Unlike the original 1972 television series, which was largely aimed at a younger demographic, this OVA leans heavily into the apocalyptic horror and visceral body-horror themes that define the source material’s conclusion.
The animation was directed by Kenichi Takeshita, who aimed to capture the gritty, hallucinogenic intensity of Nagai’s artwork. By focusing specifically on the character of Amon and the psychological disintegration of Akira Fudo, the production sought to emphasize the tragic transformation of the protagonist amidst a global demonic invasion. Upon its release, it was noted by audiences for its uncompromising approach to the manga's bleak narrative, standing as a stark contrast to more mainstream interpretations of the franchise.
