Where it came from
Animation! was produced as a direct-to-video OVA (Original Video Animation) during the height of the 1980s and 1990s Japanese animation boom. This format allowed studios to explore experimental narratives and visual styles that did not fit the constraints of television broadcast requirements or the blockbuster budget expectations of theatrical features.
The production sought to showcase the technical versatility of its animators, focusing on fluid motion and stylized character design characteristic of the era's independent OVA market. While it occupies a niche place in animation history, it remains a notable example of the period's creative independence, where studios leveraged the home video market to distribute self-contained works directly to a dedicated enthusiast audience.
