Where it came from
The Animation × Paralympic: Who Is Your Hero? project was released in 2017 as a collaborative public awareness campaign between the NHK and various renowned animation studios. Developed in anticipation of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the initiative sought to familiarize the Japanese public with Paralympic sports by integrating them into the visual language of iconic anime. This specific installment, produced by Nippon Animation, utilizes the studio's classic, gentle aesthetic style to highlight the technical precision and spirit required for Paralympic competition.
The creative direction for this series focused on humanizing the athletes, moving away from purely documentary portrayals toward a narrative format that emphasizes dedication and overcoming adversity. By pairing the history of Nippon Animation with the dynamic movements of para-sports, the creators aimed to bridge the gap between pop culture enthusiasts and the Paralympic movement. The work was received as a sensitive and effective piece of cultural outreach, praised for its ability to maintain the artistic integrity of the studio while serving as a functional tool for social advocacy.
