Where it came from
Released in 2010, this special short animation was produced by studio ufotable as a crossover promotional project. It was designed to bridge the gap between Anime Tenchou, the long-running mascot character for the Japanese retail chain Animate, and the wildly popular Touhou Project bullet hell game series created by Team Shanghai Alice. The short served as a piece of collaborative marketing aimed at driving engagement within the vibrant otome and gaming fandoms of the era.
The animation features the hyper-energetic Anime Tenchou character, Anizawa Meito, venturing into the surreal world of Gensokyo to interact with protagonists Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Directed and produced with the high-production aesthetic that ufotable was beginning to solidify as their signature, the piece was received as a lighthearted, self-aware curiosity. It effectively utilized the distinct visual language of both franchises, blending Animate's corporate iconography with the established character designs of ZUN's Touhou universe.
