Where it came from
Ankoku Cat was produced by the studio Fanworks and released in 2006 as an original net animation, or ONA. Created during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly experimenting with web-based distribution, the short film served as a showcase for independent, stylistically distinct storytelling that operated outside the constraints of traditional television broadcast cycles.
The animation reflects a surrealist aesthetic characteristic of early digital-era experimental shorts, focusing on atmosphere and minimalist visual design rather than long-form narrative structure. While it remains a niche piece within the broader portfolio of Fanworks, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of the 2000s web-animation scene for its unique artistic direction and its role in demonstrating how small studios could leverage the growing reach of the internet to distribute unconventional content to a global audience.
