Where it came from
Released in 2019 as the 31st installment in the long-running Anpanman film series, this feature was produced by TMS Entertainment to celebrate the franchise's enduring popularity. The story centers on a character named Princess Vanilla, who struggles with the responsibilities of ruling the Ice Cream Land, eventually seeking the guidance of Anpanman and his allies to gain confidence in her duties.
The film was directed by Hitoyuki Matsui, a veteran of the series, who aimed to balance the gentle, moralistic themes central to Takashi Yanase's original creations with a visually vibrant depiction of the ice cream-themed kingdom. It was well-received by its target demographic of young children and their families, continuing the tradition of the annual summer film releases that have kept the franchise culturally relevant in Japan for decades.
