Where it came from
Appleseed XIII was released in 2011 as a thirteen-episode original video animation series that reimagines the cyberpunk world created by Masamune Shirow. Produced by Production I.G and Jinni's Animation Studios, the series was designed to explore a different narrative path for protagonists Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires, distinct from previous film adaptations like the 2004 and 2007 features.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, which utilized a blend of traditional cel-shaded 3D character models against digital backgrounds to achieve a unique aesthetic, a hallmark of director Takayuki Hamana’s approach during that period. While it garnered attention for its ambitious attempt to translate Shirow’s dense world-building into an episodic format, it received a mixed reception from fans who were divided on the experimental animation techniques and the stylistic departure from the franchise's cinematic roots.
