Appleseed XIII: Tartaros

Appleseed XIII: Tartaros represents the second theatrical compilation film released in 2011, derived from the 13-episode CGI anime series directed by Takayuki Hamana. The series itself serves as a reimagining of Masamune Shirow's seminal cyberpunk manga, focusing on the exploits of Deunan Knute and the cyborg Briareos Hecatonchires in the utopian city of Olympus. This project was developed as a collaborative effort between Production I.G and Jinni's Animation Studios to experiment with a distinct aesthetic style that blended traditional cel-shaded animation techniques with modern digital rendering.

The design philosophy behind the project sought to provide a more character-driven narrative compared to previous film adaptations like the 2004 Shinji Aramaki version. The creative team aimed to maintain the series' signature blend of high-octane tactical combat and philosophical inquiry into post-human existence. While the experimental animation style drew mixed critical reactions for its departure from the high-budget cinematic polish of earlier franchise entries, it remains a notable entry in the long history of adaptations of Shirow's influential source material.
