Where it came from
Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2002. The series is based on a popular Japanese collectible card game, which functioned as a multimedia platform blending fantasy elements with modern-day settings. The anime adaptation was developed to capitalize on the franchise's growing fanbase by weaving a narrative about individuals known as 'Aquarians' who possess supernatural abilities and are caught in an ancient, ongoing conflict.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to reflect the diverse aesthetic established by the card game's various artists. Madhouse focused on balancing the complex world-building of the source material with a character-driven plot, aiming to draw in both established players of the card game and newcomers to the genre. Upon its release, it was noted for its ambitious scope, though it remains primarily remembered as a specific relic of the early 2000s trend of adapting tabletop gaming properties into television anime.
