Where it came from
Aquarion EVOL was produced by studio Satelight in 2012 as a spiritual successor to the 2005 series Genesis of Aquarion. Directed by Shoji Kawamori, the series was designed to explore themes of emotional connection and reincarnation in a futuristic setting, utilizing a unique combination of traditional hand-drawn animation and intricate 3D mechanical designs. It served as a continuation of the franchise's legacy while establishing a distinct narrative path separate from its predecessor.
The visual identity of the series, characterized by its vibrant mecha designs and dramatic, sweeping action sequences, was received as a stylistic evolution of the brand. Kawamori sought to emphasize the interplay between the characters' internal romantic struggles and the external conflicts of the pilots. While it garnered attention for its complex lore and soundtrack, it is primarily recognized by enthusiasts as a bold effort to modernize the 'Super Robot' genre for a contemporary audience.
