Synopsis

A scourge is sweeping across the galaxy—a scourge called the Blasters! These devious and handily-numbered alien invaders conquer, devour, and destroy every civilized world they see—and now, their sights are set on Earth! But worry not, good children, because Earth has a top-secret countermeasure developed by Dr. Hoshi and the International Science Police Headquarters.

Our secret weapon is the mighty, towering super robot, Astroganger! Crafted from mysterious alien living metal, the robot Ganger has just one weakness—he's kinda dumb! Enter the best person for the job, Dr. Hoshi's ten-year-old son Kantaro.

By joining their powers together, Ganger and Kantaro fuse the incredible power of a fightin', flyin' robot with the uncompromisingly savage, decisive intelligence of a middle schooler: Astroganger! With their powers combined, they'll save the world approximately twenty-six times!

Provenance

Where it came from

Astroganger, produced by Knack Productions and debuting in 1972, holds a unique distinction in the history of Japanese animation as one of the earliest examples of a giant robot series. Created during the dawn of the mecha genre, the show followed the adventures of Hoshi Kantaro, who merged with a sentient robot from outer space to defend Earth against alien invaders. Unlike many subsequent series that relied heavily on technical upgrades or pilot-controlled cockpits, the robot in Astroganger possessed its own personality and physical form, making it a precursor to the hero-centered tokusatsu-style narratives of the era.

The visual design of the series reflects the experimental aesthetic of early 1970s anime, characterized by bold, simplified character lines and a vibrant color palette typical of Knack Productions. While the series did not achieve the immense, lasting cultural footprint of contemporaries like Mazinger Z, it was well-received as an early pioneer in the genre. Its legacy is often cited by animation historians as a bridge between the traditional monster-of-the-week formula and the increasingly complex robotic sagas that would define the medium for decades to follow.
