Where it came from
Au Fou! is a 1965 short experimental film produced by Kuri Jikken Manga Kobo, the studio founded by Yoji Kuri. Emerging from the post-war Japanese avant-garde movement, the studio sought to distance itself from the narrative conventions of mainstream animation. Kuri utilized the medium to explore themes of isolation, absurdity, and social critique, reflecting the disillusionment prevalent in the artistic circles of 1960s Tokyo.
The film is emblematic of Kuri's minimalist, surrealist aesthetic, which often relied on stark visual contrasts and repetitive, unsettling imagery. As an independent production, it was designed for art-house screenings and festivals rather than commercial television. It contributed significantly to the studio’s international reputation, helping to establish Kuri as a pivotal figure in the development of independent, non-commercial animation styles.
