Azumanga Web Daioh

Azumanga Web Daioh was released in 2000 as a pioneering web-based original net animation (ONA). Produced by studio Ajiado, this series preceded the more widely known 2002 television adaptation and served as a digital proof-of-concept for the surreal gag comedy manga series by Kiyohiko Azuma. Its creation was part of a burgeoning experimental era in Japanese animation, where production companies began exploring the internet as a viable distribution platform for short-form, low-bandwidth content.

The design and animation aesthetic were notably distinct from the later television series, characterized by a more minimalist, loose style that leaned into the absurd rhythm of the original four-panel comic strips.
