Back Street Girls -GOKUDOLS-

Back Street Girls -GOKUDOLS- was produced by the studio J.C.Staff and released as a television series in 2018. It is based on the manga series by Jasmine Gyuh, which debuted in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine in 2015. The story follows three yakuza members who, after a disastrous failure, are forced by their boss to undergo gender reassignment surgery and plastic surgery to debut as a female idol group, attempting to pay off their debt through show business.

The series is noted for its unconventional aesthetic, which heavily utilizes static images and minimal animation to create a surreal, slideshow-like comedic effect. Directed by Chiaki Kon, the production design leans into the absurdity of the premise, juxtaposing the hyper-masculine personalities of the protagonists with their idol personas. The series received a polarizing reception from audiences, who were largely divided between appreciating the unique, experimental visual style and finding the lack of fluid animation jarring.
