Where it came from
Backflip!!, known in Japan as Bakuten!!, was produced by studio ZEXCS and released in 2021 as part of the Fuji TV 'Noitamina' programming block. The series was created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, serving as part of an initiative to promote the Tohoku region, specifically the city of Iwanuma in Miyagi Prefecture, where the story is set.
The animation focuses on the niche sport of men's rhythmic gymnastics, emphasizing fluid movement and character synchronization. Directed by Toshimasa Kuroyanagi with character designs by Robico, the series was well-received for its uplifting tone and detailed portrayal of the physical demands of the sport, successfully balancing the intense training regimen of the characters with a narrative centered on team camaraderie and personal growth.
