Where it came from
Released in 1995, Bad Badtz-Maru no Otoko Dokyou no Omoiyari is an original video animation produced by Sanrio to showcase the personality of Badtz-Maru, a character introduced in 1993. As the company looked to expand the narrative depth of its rising star, this OVA served to establish the character's mischievous yet charming persona, positioning him as a distinct departure from the softer, more traditionally sweet Sanrio mascots of the era.
The animation was crafted to highlight the edgy, rebellious aesthetic that made Badtz-Maru a cultural touchstone during the mid-nineties. By focusing on his playful cynicism and the humorous trials of his daily life, the production team aimed to broaden the appeal of Sanrio's portfolio to include older children and adolescents. The work reflects a pivotal moment in Sanrio's history where they began experimenting with more nuanced character-driven storytelling within their merchandise-led strategy.
