Where it came from
Baki Gaiden: Retsu Kaiou wa Isekai Tensei Shitemo Ikkou ni Kamawan, or Retsu Kaiou Does Not Mind Even If He Reincarnates in Another World, originated as a manga spin-off of Keisuke Itagaki's long-running Baki the Grappler series. Launched in 2020 by writers Baku Saihou and Eiji Murai with art by Mutsumi Minami, the series functions as an 'isekai' reimagining that follows the fan-favorite martial artist Retsu Kaiou after his defeat in the main canon. By transposing Retsu's signature Chinese Kenpo into a fantasy setting, the series playfully subverts both the Baki franchise's hyper-masculine tone and the conventions of the popular portal-fantasy genre.
The 2024 television series adaptation, produced by TMS Entertainment, aims to capture the distinct kinetic energy and exaggerated anatomical detail of the source material. It retains the Baki franchise's hallmark focus on intense martial arts choreography while layering in the whimsical, high-stakes humor inherent to the 'reincarnation' subgenre. The production received moderate attention for its commitment to the established visual identity of the Baki universe, serving as a stylistic bridge between Itagaki's original brutal combat aesthetic and the lighter, comedic tone required for this character-driven side story.
