Where it came from
Bakutsuri Bar Hunter emerged in 2018 as a multimedia collaboration between Toei Animation, Bandai, and Shogakukan. The project was designed to bridge physical and digital play, centered on a toy peripheral that clipped onto a Nintendo 3DS to scan barcodes, which the series treats as gateways to mystical underwater realms inhabited by monsters known as Bar Souls.
The series was conceived as a high-energy shonen adventure, with the character designs and visual style aiming to capture a younger demographic through a blend of surreal humor and action-oriented storytelling. While the television series sought to capitalize on the popularity of collectible-driven media franchises, it is remembered primarily for its distinctively quirky aesthetic and its integration with the unique barcode-scanning gameplay mechanics developed for the handheld console market.
