Where it came from
Bastions was produced by Thymos Media as an original net animation, or ONA, reflecting the studio's broader commitment to exploring complex sociopolitical themes within the medium of animation. The project emerged during a period of increased interest in high-concept, serialized storytelling delivered directly to digital platforms, allowing creators to bypass traditional broadcast constraints and focus on a more nuanced, character-driven narrative style.
The design and visual direction of Bastions were centered on maintaining a grounded, atmospheric aesthetic that emphasized the psychological weight of its setting. By prioritizing clear silhouettes and a muted, industrial color palette, the creative team sought to immerse viewers in the internal and external conflicts faced by the protagonists. While the series was developed for a specific niche audience, it has been noted for its deliberate pacing and its attempt to elevate standard genre tropes through focused world-building.
