Bath House of Whales

Bath House of Whales originated from the creative halls of Geidai Animation, the celebrated department within the Tokyo University of the Arts. Produced as a student project that showcased the high technical standard and imaginative depth encouraged by the program, the film was conceived as a showcase of traditional cel animation techniques blended with contemporary narrative sensibilities. It emerged during a period of significant growth for Japanese independent animation, reflecting a desire to push the boundaries of storytelling through surrealist imagery and hand-drawn aesthetics.

The film is defined by its whimsical yet poignant design, which centers on the unusual intersection of aquatic life and human domestic rituals. The artists focused on fluid character movement and a distinct, muted color palette to evoke a sense of underwater serenity and nostalgia. Upon its release within the festival circuit, the work received critical appreciation for its poetic direction and the clarity of its visual language, cementing the reputation of its creators as promising talents within the domestic animation landscape.
