B.B. Fish

B.B. Fish was released in 1994 as an original video animation produced by the renowned studio Production I.G. It emerged during a period of experimentation for the studio, which was then transitioning from a supporting animation house into a prominent creator of original properties. The project served as an early showcase for the studio's technical capabilities, focusing on the blend of traditional cel animation and early digital storytelling techniques that were gaining traction within the Japanese animation industry at the time.

The production sought to balance whimsical character-driven narratives with a distinct visual flair characteristic of 1990s experimental anime. While it did not achieve the widespread mainstream recognition of later Production I.G works like Ghost in the Shell, it is historically regarded as a deep-cut example of the studio's mid-nineties portfolio. Critics and fans often view it as a curiosity that highlights the creative freedom afforded to directors during the height of the direct-to-video bubble.
