Where it came from
Pororo the Little Penguin, known in South Korea as Bborongbborong Bbororo, debuted in 2003 as a collaborative production between Ocon Studios, Iconix Entertainment, Educational Broadcasting System, and Signal Entertainment Group. Created to fill a gap in the domestic market for high-quality preschool animation, the series was designed to emphasize social cooperation and emotional intelligence through the adventures of Pororo and his friends in the snowy village of Porong Porong Forest.
The character design, characterized by simple, rounded shapes and a distinct color palette, was intended to be visually soothing and memorable for toddlers. The series achieved significant critical and commercial success, earning the nickname 'President Pororo' among South Korean children due to its immense cultural ubiquity and the extensive line of merchandise that followed its release.
