Where it came from
Beat & Motion was developed by Netflix as part of their strategy to foster original anime productions in collaboration with Japanese studios. Released as an ONA (Original Net Animation) in 2023, the project originated from the Anime Creators' Base, a project established to provide a platform for new voices and experimental storytelling formats. The narrative explores the intersection of creative pursuits, following the parallel artistic journeys of a manga artist and an animator.
The visual direction and character designs were crafted to emphasize the kinetic energy of the artistic process, utilizing a distinct aesthetic that contrasts the static nature of manga panels with the fluid movement of animation. By centering the story on the professional challenges of creators, the production aimed to resonate with audiences interested in the behind-the-scenes reality of the industry. It was received as a niche but sincere tribute to the dedication required in creative fields.
