Where it came from
Because was written by John Lennon and released by The Beatles on their 1969 album Abbey Road. The composition was famously inspired by Yoko Ono playing Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, commonly known as the Moonlight Sonata, on the piano. Lennon asked her to play the chords backward, which served as the harmonic foundation for the song's haunting, melancholic structure.
The recording is noted for its complex three-part vocal harmonies, performed by Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, who triple-tracked their voices to create a choir-like effect. Produced by George Martin, the song eschews traditional percussion, relying instead on a minimalist arrangement of guitar, harpsichord, and Moog synthesizer to achieve its atmospheric, ethereal quality, which remains a benchmark for studio production in the late 1960s.
