Ben-To originated as a series of light novels written by Asaura and illustrated by Kaito Shibano, first published in 2008. The story follows a high school student who joins an underground society of students who compete for half-priced bento boxes at local supermarkets, a premise rooted in the author's humorous observation of aggressive shopping culture. The anime adaptation, produced by studio David Production and broadcast on AT-X in 2011, brought this eccentric narrative to life with high-energy action sequences and a self-aware comedic tone that leaned into the absurdity of its martial-arts-inspired supermarket brawls.

The production sought to balance intense, stylized fight choreography with the lighthearted social dynamics of the high school protagonists. Directed by Shin Itagaki, the anime was noted for its unique juxtaposition of mundane grocery store settings with the gravity of a battlefield.
