Belladonna of Sadness

Belladonna of Sadness was produced by Mushi Production in 1973 as the final installment of the Animerama trilogy, an ambitious project spearheaded by Osamu Tezuka to create mature, experimental animated films for adult audiences. Inspired by Jules Michelet's 1862 historical essay La Sorcière, the film depicts the tragic transformation of a peasant woman who enters into a pact with the devil following a brutal assault. The film serves as an artistic departure from traditional animation, favoring static watercolor paintings and minimalist movement over conventional frame-by-frame narrative techniques.

The film's visual language was largely defined by illustrator Kuni Fukai, who utilized a distinct psychedelic, art-nouveau style characterized by fluid lines and ethereal color palettes. Because it strayed so far from the industry standards of the time, the film was a commercial failure upon its initial release and remained largely obscure for decades. It has since undergone a significant critical reappraisal, celebrated today by film scholars and enthusiasts as a landmark achievement in avant-garde animation for its daring visual composition and dark, symbolic storytelling.
