Where it came from
Beyond the Boundary -I'LL BE HERE-: Past was released in 2015 as the first part of a two-film theatrical project summarizing and expanding upon the 2013 Kyoto Animation television series. Produced by the studio during a period of high creative output, the film serves as a compilation feature that retells the narrative of Mirai Kuriyama and Akihito Kanbara from Mirai's perspective, streamlining the original series' supernatural drama for the big screen.
The production maintains the visual hallmark of Kyoto Animation, emphasizing fluidity in action sequences and meticulous attention to character expression. Directed by Taichi Ishidate, the film was designed to bridge the gap between the original television broadcast and the subsequent sequel film, Future, allowing audiences to revisit the emotional core of the series' lore while refining the pacing of its complex urban fantasy plot.
