Known as the Bibliophile Princess for her unquenchable love of books, Lady Eliana Bernstein wants nothing more than to shirk social duties in favor of retreating to the library. So, when the handsome Crown Prince Christopher promises to shield her from high-society drudgery in exchange for pretending to be his fiancée, she jumps at the chance to hide behind their sham relationship and read to her heart’s content (especially since he’s offered her access to the palace library). But much like the plot of her favorite novel, soon Eli’s feelings for the prince develop in unexpected ways, and she realizes she can’t always judge a royal book by its cover.

Where it came from
Bibliophile Princess, known in Japan as Mushikaburi-hime, was adapted into an anime series by Studio Madhouse in 2022. Based on the light novel series written by Yui Kikuchi, the narrative follows Lady Elianna Bernstein, a noblewoman whose devotion to books and archives leads her into the complex political maneuvering of the royal court. The production was directed by Tarou Iwasaki, who aimed to emphasize the series' romantic atmosphere and intricate period-inspired character designs, maintaining a visual focus on the library settings that define the protagonist's world.
The series emerged during a period of rising interest in historical fantasy and 'otome-style' narratives within the light novel adaptation market. Studio Madhouse transitioned from its reputation for gritty action titles to a more delicate, character-driven aesthetic for this project, utilizing soft palettes and lush background art to mirror the source material's gentle tone. While reception varied among international viewers, the series is recognized for its commitment to the aesthetic of the original character illustrations by Satsuki Shiina, prioritizing a fairytale visual identity that complements the source's focus on bibliophilic dedication.
