Where it came from
The Big Order OVA was released in 2015 as a companion to the supernatural manga series written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno, who is best known for his work on Future Diary. Produced by the studio Asread, the animation was conceived as a bridge between the serialized print version and the later full television series adaptation. It focuses on the dark, high-stakes themes central to Esuno's storytelling, where characters possess 'Orders'—supernatural abilities linked to their deepest desires.
The production sought to capture the intense, often chaotic aesthetic of the manga through a condensed narrative format. Asread aimed to establish the bleak tone of the series, utilizing character designs that mirrored the manga's jagged, aggressive art style. Upon its release, it was primarily received by an established fanbase familiar with Esuno's previous works, serving as both a standalone highlight of the series' lore and a tactical promotional effort for the subsequent TV anime production.
