After a falling out with his middle school team, Mihashi enters Nishiura high school with no social skill, a warped opinion of himself, and every intention to quit baseball. The newly formed Nishiura baseball team, however, needs a pitcher, and they welcome him. Most enthusiastic is Abe, a domineering catcher with his own game issues.
And so a battery every bit as complementary as it is dysfunctional is formed. If they can figure out how to work together, they might be the answers to each other's problems-and the team might be able to win.

Where it came from
Big Windup!, known in Japan as Ookiku Furikabutte, was produced by A-1 Pictures and premiered in 2007. The series is based on the ongoing manga by Asa Higuchi, which began serialization in 2003. It was created to provide a grounded, psychological approach to the sports genre, moving away from the hyperbolic tropes common in many baseball anime to focus on the technical mechanics of the sport and the internal development of its young protagonists.
The animation was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, who sought to capture the nuance of Higuchi's character-driven narrative. The production is widely regarded for its meticulous attention to baseball strategy and the complex, often anxious emotional states of its lead pitcher, Ren Mihashi. Upon its release, the series received critical acclaim for its realistic character studies and high production values, establishing a dedicated following that appreciated its departure from traditional sports drama conventions.
