Where it came from
Binetsu: Yakusoku no Toki, released in 2000, is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) produced during a period when the adult anime industry was highly active in exploring mature, character-driven narratives. It was developed to cater to an audience looking for melodramatic, romance-focused stories, placing it firmly within the late nineties and early millennium tradition of visual-novel-style adaptations that prioritized emotional tension over action.
The production sought to lean into the aesthetic sensibilities of the time, characterized by soft, atmospheric art direction intended to heighten the intimacy of its central relationships. While it remains a niche entry within the OVA format, its release is reflective of the broader studio efforts to diversify adult-oriented animation by focusing on sequential storytelling and character interplay rather than solely relying on episodic premises.
