Where it came from
Birdie Wing -Golf Girls' Story- was produced by Bandai Namco Pictures and premiered in 2022 as an original sports anime project. Departing from traditional, grounded portrayals of golf, the series was conceived as a high-stakes, dramatic narrative that blends athletic competition with elements of underground organized crime and stylized, larger-than-life character archetypes.
The series was directed by Takayuki Inagaki and featured character designs by Minoru Akiba, who aimed for a distinctively vibrant aesthetic that balances the technical aspects of the sport with intense, hyperbolic action sequences. The show was well-received by audiences for its audacity and refusal to adhere to standard sports genre tropes, gaining a dedicated following for its campy flair and creative approach to golf maneuvers.
