Birthday Boy

Birthday Boy is an animated short film released in 2004, written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Sejong Park. Produced as a graduate project at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, the film depicts the experiences of a young boy named Manuk who wanders through his war-torn village in South Korea during the 1950s. The narrative is uniquely told through the child's perspective, contrasting his innocence and mundane birthday preparations with the stark, harrowing debris of an ongoing conflict.

The film is notable for its sophisticated use of computer-generated imagery to emulate the texture and warmth of hand-drawn art, a stylistic choice intended to ground the heavy subject matter in a more personal, empathetic light. It received significant critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film in 2005. The film was widely praised for its emotional restraint and its ability to convey the profound impact of war on civilians without resorting to explicit violence.
