Where it came from
Released in 1984 as an early pioneer of the original video animation format, Birth was produced by Studio Kaname and directed by Shinya Sadamitsu. The project served as a creative showcase for the artistic talents of Yoshitaka Amano, who provided the character designs. Set on the alien planet Aqualoid, the narrative follows a young protagonist named Nam as he navigates a conflict between humanity and a biomechanical machine race known as the Inorganics.
The production is primarily noted for its avant-garde visual style, heavily influenced by Amano's ethereal and intricate aesthetic. Rather than focusing on a traditional linear plot, the work prioritized atmospheric world-building and experimental animation techniques. While it received a modest reception upon its initial release, it remains a significant historical artifact within the 1980s Japanese animation scene, representing the era's adventurous approach to the direct-to-video market.
