Where it came from
Bite Me! Chameleon was produced by Visual House Egg in 1992 as a direct-to-video original video animation. It emerged during a period when the Japanese animation industry was experimenting with high-concept, short-form storytelling designed specifically for the rental market, often leaning into surrealism and niche aesthetic sensibilities that differed from mainstream television broadcast standards.
The production sought to blend traditional cel-based character design with the peculiar, hyper-stylized atmosphere characteristic of early nineties avant-garde animation. While it did not achieve significant mainstream recognition, the project remains a noted curiosity among animation historians for its distinct visual language and its reflection of the creative freedom afforded by the ova format during that era.
